The Good and Bad of Goal Setting

How Goal Setting Can Derail Us or Empower Us

New year, new thoughts, new hopes and dreams. So, what is it about goals and goal setting that deserves our time and attention?And, why can this very thought and process derail us?

THAT is today’s show topic!

 

 

It’s human nature to always have hope, possibility, and expect the potential of what might be!

 

I want to dive into goals, goal setting, the fears we have around this process, and what we really must know about goals.

 

One of my favorite quotes is by Jim Rohn, on goals -

 

The true power and success in setting a goal is the transformation, growth and learning you accomplish on the way to achieving it.

 

We covered this on last week’s show, on Success Planning.

 

The challenge with most goal setting.

 

Random thought of what we want.

 

No true planning before.

 

No planning for actually achieving it.

 

And, 365 days stretching ahead of us.

 

The problem with this much time to achieve the goal:

 

We procrastinate.

 

We forget.

 

We get distracted.

 

We let fear settle in.

 

Last week, we picked one big STRETCH goal for 2021. Or, at least I did. Have you?

 

Here’s what most often happens once we select that goal.

 

We start out excited, feel anticipation, big expectations.

 

Then, our monkey mind throws open the door.

 

“Who do you think you are? You can’t possibly think you are capable of achieving that goal. Why would you even want to try?”

 

People will laugh.

 

Make a fool of yourself.

 

Just be happy with what you have.

 

Am I right?

 

Do you feel a little doubt right now about the goal you have chosen?

 

It’s okay. It’s normal. We all experience this.

 

I have doubts about 3 times a day, on average.

 

However, when I remember the quote -

 

The true power and success in setting a goal is the transformation, growth and learning you accomplish on the way to achieving it.

 

I just remind myself that my job is not to focus so much on HOW exactly I’m going to get there; who my clients are going to be or where I will find them. Or, they will find me.

 

My job, and my only job is to be clear on who I am becoming on the way to this goal.

 

What transformation must I go through?

 

What growth must I experience?

 

What learning is ahead for me, and how will I be open to it?

 

There are 3 things I focus on. Well, 2 sets of 3, and I’ll explain.

 

First, always, the 3 Cs -

 

Clarity, Commitment and Consistency

 

What do those mean in my business?

 

Clarity - Why?

What do I sell, to Who, How

 

Clarity is POWER - why? Well, a lack of clarity, when we wake up in the morning means we are struggling with where to focus. What to do. How to do it. Why to do it.

 

There is no internal conflict or confusion on what to do; and when to do it; and what is next.

 

How can you improve and excel without clarity? If you don’t know what to do?

 

When I have clarity - I KNOW exactly what is going to happen in my day. It’s in my calendar and planned. My marketing, online and offline; my follow ups and connections with new people; serving my clients. Personal growth and my TDL and mindset work. Fitness, Family - it’s all there.

 

Next, we move to commitment.

 

We get stuck thinking we “need” to know more in order to even get started, much less to be successful.

 

But really, we don’t.

 

We are stuck in fear, procrastination and other emotions and thoughts that are coming up for us.

 

Right now; what are the fears that hold you back in your business?

 

Are you afraid someone will ask a question you don’t have the answer to?

 

How is this holding you back now? Are you in the ditch of your business?

 

Is it true that you must have the answer to everything?

 

Do you know how and where to find the answer?

 

IF, and when you need it?

 

Are you committed to finding that answer?

 

We just have thoughts. All day, every day.

 

Our thoughts derail us a great deal of the time. 90% of our thoughts are repetitive and your Reptile brain is just trying to keep you safe, secure, and out of pain.

 

When I took my business online in 1999, I had huge fear, not the least was that Y2K and the change of the millennium was going to take out everything.

 

Ha! Funny now.

 

I just knew, though, if anyone had done it; was doing it; I could too.

 

And, I was highly committed to figuring it out.

 

I figured out marketing funnels; and content to create; what type and where.

 

And, I was committed to doing whatever it takes, so I got into action every day.

 

So, ask yourself -

 

Do I know where to find help?

 

How committed am I?

 

Do I want help?

 

Let’s talk.

 

Consistency is just that - showing up and doing what needs to be done, no matter what. Trusting the process when you can’t see it yet. Knowing that it will come.

 

My second set of 3 things to remember are - mindset, messaging and marketing.

 

These are my 3 daily focus areas.

 

Where is my mind today? What thoughts am I thinking and are they in alignment with my goals?

 

Who am I with this thought? Is this who I want to be? How will I pivot?

My thoughts create my results, reality and outcomes EVERY time.

I am committed to being aware, present and curious at all times with my thoughts.

Basically, I focus on being in alignment with the words I speak, write and share. Are they authentic; true to me; speaking to my ideal client?

Then, is marketing - that’s where my tribe shows up.

When my mindset is aligned with my goals, and my messaging is authentic and speaks my truth, it can’t help but find the right people.

Each day, it is very clear for me what I must do to get to that goal. It is one step at a time, one foot in front of the other in forward motion, day in and day out.

Success is sexy, the road to get there, not so much.

The path to greatness is paved with thorny bushes. That’s okay. You are tough. We are tough, and we can do tough things.

I trust in this process with all of my heart. And, it’s worked for me always, and has been proven by me for the last 24 years, that I first became consciously aware of my thoughts.

And, you must begin to know this too, to move yourself forward.
