Social Selling Myths and Lies
There are a lot of myths out there about what sells, succeeds and gets noticed online, in the Social Platforms.
Let's dive in to the questions that most often come to me and what I really wanted to clarify for you in terms of the lies of social media.
Social Media Platforms Make My Content Available to Everyone
All of My Friends see it
They will let me know if they are interested.
I don't want to bug people.
I have to always create new content.
I don't need a blog, website or email list.
I've been a social seller since October of 1999 before social selling was even a thing before that was even known I took my network marketing business online way back then.
I had no clue what I was doing but I caught the vision of the type of leverage that can be created for me and my team.
By creating content marketing myself out in a way that would create interest with my ideal clients now here's The funny thing I didn't know anything about building a brand I don't even know if i'd ever really heard the term brand.
All of us have a brand we all have a brand we don't necessarily intentionally think about that brand, but if you want to be a successful social seller and you want to attract people to you.
So that you become the hunted and not the hunter is I always like to say.
That it's important that you define your brand ideally defining your brand around your values and what matters to you because that's what's ultimately going to help you attract that ideal aligned.
Back in 1999, things were different. I was taught to build a website; build an email list and begin to market yourself out there. This was taught to me by my mentors.
I caught a vision for how powerful That was because I knew I can leverage myself out on social media and by leverage What I mean is:
I created this on zoom and on Facebook, so anybody who's watching live is going to benefit from this today, now, and in the future as it will live on.
Then, I add it to my podcast, Youtube and my Blog
Before the internet, I would have to be in a hotel room or a conference Center, teaching this on stage. The only people who would have access to this were the people who would be in front of me at that time.
But with these tools online, I knew I could leverage myself, so the content that I could put out there would continue to be found and market/sell for me!
So I went about building my business through my website do marketing content out there and to building an email list. later came social media and that really paved the way to be able to get my message out there in a much bigger way.
Here's what happened a lot of the people who I began working with stopped building their website they canceled their domain name they canceled their web hosting they stopped building an email list they stopped doing all that and what they would say to me is.
"All I need is social media i'm just gonna let social media go to work for me"
I remember thinking: that's really interesting I would never put all my eggs in one basket, especially a basket that I don't own and we've seen it in the past.
We're seeing it again today with the censorship that's going on, by big tech and i'm not just talking about political figures.
i'm talking about a lot of people in the health wellness fitness and certainly certainly the natural health space are finding that their content is being removed.
Or it's being shadow banned or it's being blocked largely and it's not being put out there on social for a number of different reasons i'm not going to get into the politics of all that.
And it is a little bit political but all that to say, these are mostly bots Okay, the robots that are out there censoring this information.
So, if in if you're in that particular space, or perhaps you're in a space where you've been very outspoken about certain topics right now that aren't popular trending on big tech companies, it could be that your information is getting blocked, so one of the things that I hear is.
"You know, why is it that my content, I used to go live on Facebook and talk about natural alternatives to health and wellness and i'm not getting near the engagement today that I was getting a year ago, or even six months ago."
It's because you don't own that platform you don't own your ability to know who's going to see it.
We trust that, when we put content out on social media that people are seeing it, but how do we really know who's seen it.
How do we really know and there's a big myth out there, with so many people that they think.
They put a post out on Facebook or linkedin or wherever, and they think that everyone who their friends with or who follows them or that they're in some way connected with.
They tend to believe that everyone is going to see that content.
And that simply is not the case, think about how little content you actually see now I have nearly 5,000 friends on Facebook.
And I know, without a doubt that not nearly all those people are seeing my content. In fact, if you go in and scroll you would were to scroll all the way down the Facebook newsfeed you would hit the end at about 300 pieces of content. that's all the bandwidth that Facebook really has to deliver that content to you in any one given time that you're on your phone or on your computer scrolling and looking at Facebook.
But if you have 3000 friends, if even half of them are active on social media on any given day that's at least over 90% of pieces of content out there, and you and I both know we aren't seeing all that so well, I will never suggest not using social media as a marketing platform you never want it to be your only funnel for delivering those leads to you and being able to communicate over and over and over again with your ideal aligned audience so remember not everyone is senior content.
Myth number two is i'm worried about offending people I don't want to put put my business or anything about my business out on social media and I have to ask you why not.
Why not, if you know how to market effectively, you can do so in a way that isn't going to offend people.
If you went to a neighborhood party or you showed up at the local sports bar and you sat around talking to people who you know are just having conversation. chances are your business would come up and you wouldn't go into sales mode.
If you're a real estate agent, you might tell them about the latest house that you listed and something that you find really intriguing about it.
But you wouldn't necessarily say, do you want to buy it, are you ready to buy this House, you would share interesting facts and things that you found interesting right think about.
It's called social media for a reason and save that 20% for business type post and engagement okay that's going to get so much more you can go back to my Facebook profile right now.
Recently I posted a link about this very live call I was hosting and itgot very little engagement got very little engagement, but that's okay.
It didn't generate some response What that means is people didn't comment on it, they didn't like it, but I added some new people to the group I got some questions about it, so I know that it created interest.
But a sunrise photo has over 700 engagements and comments! Still keeps me top of mind!
Myth number three that I hear the lie that we tell ourselves is that if they're interested, they will tell me.
If they're interested, they will tell me now I just got done saying what you don't want to do is constantly be out there, sharing in a very salesy way.
And so you don't necessarily want to just be pitching people right up front right with the content that you share, but when people begin to ask questions or comment or engage there's nothing wrong.
